Grandma Layton’s Caramel Dumplings

Caramel Dumplings and Ice Cream

These are a TREAT on a cold winter day and the ingredients are usually in your pantry.

It is my Great Grandma Layton’s recipe, whose last name is Bridger’s middle name. Great Grandma Layton got this dumpling recipe from her mother. That makes it my Great Great Grandma’s recipe and a “tried and true” if there ever was one. Love family, love food, and love when they go together.

I love imagining the aprons and  stovetops in the good old days when she made these. I’m sure it was very Anthropologie-esque, minus a few thousand dollars. No matter what the environment or decadethey’re made in, they serve the same purpose for every household cook; dumplings are a dollop of love.

Caramel Sauce

2 Tbl butter (not melted or softened)

1 1/2 C boiling water

1/8 tsp salt

1 1/2 C brown sugar

Place in a pan and boil gently for about 5 minutes before dropping dumplings in.

1 1/4 C flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/3 C sugar

1/4 tsp vanilla

1/8 tsp salt

1 Tb butter

1/3 milk

Cut the butter into the dry ingredients and add the rest. Drop by rounded teaspoons into boiling caramel sauce. Boil over low for 20 minutes without removing the lid.

Serve with ice cream to friends or happy hubbies and enjoy. :)
